Pulled into Chicago after two hard days through Indiana. My legs were done.
But then you arrive, and people are waiting, and you remember why you're doing it.
The local charity had arranged for six people to come down to the community centre. We had four hours. By the end we'd cut all of them, plus a few who heard what was happening and showed up.
One woman, Diane, said it was her first haircut in a year. She didn't say much after. Just sat quietly. Smiled once at the mirror. That was the whole job right there.
Local barber Terrell came along to watch, ended up picking up clippers and cutting three heads himself. Afterwards he told me he'd keep going — once a month, same community centre, same families. He's already talked to the charity about making it regular.
That's the point. That's what the network looks like. I leave, but the cuts keep coming.
Chicago: done.
