JC's Story

15 January 2024

JC grew up in the villages outside Bath. When his mother died, the place he called home stopped feeling like one. He tried to keep going, but grief has a way of pulling the floor out from under you. He ended up sleeping in a park in Peasedown before walking into Bath.

Julian House found him first. The outreach team connected him with Manvers Street, where he got a room and a chance to start again. That's where he met Eddie's team.

"I hadn't had a cut in months," JC told us. "You don't really think about it when you're just trying to get through the day. But when it was done — I looked in the mirror and I didn't feel invisible anymore."

It wasn't just the haircut. It was the conversation. Someone sitting with you, asking how you're doing. Not because it's their job, but because they mean it.

JC is focused now. He's looking into roofing work, talking to a housing officer about his own place. He still stops by the sessions when he can. Sometimes just to talk.

That's what a haircut is. A reason to sit still for twenty minutes with another human being. That's enough to start something.
